What is the story of 'The Magical Root?'
The story of The Magical Root happened during Frederick’s teenage years, when he was loaned out to a slavebreaker named Edward Covey. Covey’s job was to destroy the wills of slaves and for months in his handling of Frederick, he succeeded.
One day after a brutal beating Frederick ran away, and while hiding he came across another slave named Sandy Jenkins. After hearing about Frederick’s trials, Sandy offered Frederick a root from a tree, saying that if he kept it in his right pocket, it would be impossible for Covey or any man to whip him again. Initially, Frederick brushed it off as superstition, but after seeing Sandy’s resoluteness, he figured he’d take the root anyway.
